The second annual conference of the Society for Educating Women will be held in the historic New England town of Durham, New Hampshire on the University of New Hampshire campus from July 31st through August 1st.
The Society for Educating Women was founded in 2006 to provide opportunities for collaboration and intergenerational dialogue on scholarship on women, gender, and education. SEW's first international conference took place at Hull House in Chicago in May 2008 and featured presentations on the status of feminist research in education. This year, the SEW conference addresses the theme of "Changing the Educational Landscape for Girls and Women."
The 2009 SEW conference program will include panel discussions and symposia focused on change and prospects for change in preschool through secondary schooling, higher education, and non-school and community settings. Invited speakers include philosophers of education Jane Roland Martin and Susan Laird, critical theorist Patrocinio Schweickart, feminist art historian Mara Witzling, and literary historian Barbara White. Special sessions are scheduled on the Harriet Wilson Project, Ending Violence Against Women on Campus, and Transformations in the Secondary Curriculum. Members of Harriet Wilson Project will host a post-conference Black Heritage Tour to Milford, New Hampshire for conference attendees.
